To the Man, and his Gyro

The Gyro Guy, and Mrs. Gyro Guy

Little Athens in the Holiday Village Mall has the best fast food in Great Falls, hands down. The Gyro, pronounced "Yeeroh" is the greatest food on earth. Matay and I went there all the time for lunch when we were at work, but it was never convenient to take my wife, and she never seemed interested to go there anyway.
When I was home on mid-tour, I made sure the wife and I had a lunch date at Little Athens, without the kids, which turned out to be interesting, and let me tell you why...
When you go to Little Athens, you are The Most Important Person in the World. Matay and I would go there, and The Gyro Guy would always have a huge smile on his face and give us a "Hello you-a-military-guys-a" when we walked in. He always knew we wanted "meat cheese and sauce" and that I like onions (Matay sometimes got onions.) We didn't fall for that lettuce and tomatoes bullshit that the rookies did, so he took up that free space with more meat and Feta cheese. Matay, I'll bet you 2 tubs of olives that you had a smile on your face as you just read this paragraph!

So this time, I was not in uniform, it had been almost 7 months, and I had a hottie with me instead of Matay. Sorry Matay, yer not a hottie in my book, but you sing a great "Mustang Sally." Did the Gyro Guy recognize me? Yes. Did I get a huge F-ing smile? Yes! Did he go berzerk when he saw my wife for the first time? You bet your ass he did!!! It was like a father meeting his daughter-in-law for the first time. Apparently he approved. Then it got embarrassing.
We got there later in the lunch hour, so it was packed. Everybody had been watching the reunion as The Gyro Guy goes nuts when I walked in. He proceeds to tell my wife, at the top of his lungs, that I'm a "good boy". Mrs. Gyro Guy shakes her head at him and puts her self on soft-drink detail. After the "HE"S A GOOD BOY!" portion is over it was time to eat; spectacular as ever!
I took one picture of a fully assembled Gyro, but the focus was horrible and I didn't want to do it an injustice, so I'll take another picture in August. Hopefully he is still around, as I heard some talk that he might be closing down to retire. Those still in Great Falls, please keep me posted!

"Thank You, a military-guys, you make-a-the nice day!!!"

Ms. Lilly read in the Tribune (the newspaper that prints only what is news to them) that Lil'Athens is moving his business, still within the mall to some place with more traffic. He is looking to expand his square footage. I agree with you that Matay had a smile on his face, only it would be 3 tubs of olives and some to go. I bet that squish would be right there eating them with him too.

That is some awesome Intel, Miss Lilly! I just hope I don't catch him in the middle of the move this August. I'll be one sad puppy if I can't get a few more Gyros! If you hear when Operation Mobile Gyro goes underway, please let me know; at least I could prepare for the bad news before I get home!

Hi Tokyo Slim,

Gyros are probably one of the greatest creations on the planet. I've loved them since I was a kid. I totally agree about the lettuce and tomatoes...lol. The best Gyro I ever had was served at "John's Coney Island" on Broadway street in Gary, IN. The meat was piled so high on the pita, that you had to eat if off with a fork before even attempting to pick up the sandwich. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it :)

I found your blog doing the "Next Blog" thing at the top of the page.

Btw, check my Q&A blog called "The Big Question" at http://bigquestion2day.blogspot.com . If you get time, come answer a few questions (I post a new one each day). It's cool to see all the answers from the diverse group of readers that visit.

Take care,

Sublime
